I Hate Coffee

I chose Starbucks for my place of study for my Ethnography of a Place Project. The only problem I have with studying a simple coffee shop is that I absolutely hate coffee. The only thing I like about it is the smell. For some strange reason it smells ten times better than it tastes to me. And in some ways I'm actually happy I don't have a desire to drink it along with the rest of the american society. Coffee is in a lot of ways like a drug. People have to have that caffeine to wake up in the morning and if they don't there can be physically draining consequences such as headaches and mood swings. People are addicted to it and need their fix to make it through the day.(http://www.myaddiction.com/education/articles/caffeine_addiction.html) This is a link to an article about how powerful and addictive caffeine can be. It also gives recommendations and solutions to solving caffeine addiction problems.

This is a cartoon displaying a mad man behind a computer hooked up with an IV to a bag full of expresso. I thought this was funny because Its just an extreme exaggeration of what white collar workers are like in society behind their computer. I also think the fact that my lack of knowledge having to do with most most coffee drinkers deal with day to day and what the consume gives me only an outsiders perspective on Starbucks. The only things I will order while I'm at Starbucks would be a carmel frappuccino and a bacon egg and cheese omelet. I don't think either of those things really count as coffee. Even though I grew up in a household with two addicts as parents I still have no curiosity or desire to convert to one of the worlds most common psychoactive substance.

  1. I personally don't enjoy coffee that much, but I do love their frappucinos. I'm somewhat interested in hearing your side of the story on why you chose a place that you don't like that much, or well, the products they sell there.

  2. I really like your idea! I think you have a funny research topic ahead of you. I agree with you, coffee smells ALOT better than it tastes! Even just smelling it can make me happy. You'll have an interesting essay because you are approaching it in a different way than most people doing this project. You make a good point also about the fact that it is nice not having the habit of drinking coffee because it really can be bad for you.

  3. I am the same way. I will go visit coffee shops and love waking up to the smell of my dad brewing hazelnut or vanilla bean, but I never touch the stuff. If I ever did, it would be drowned in cream and sugar to mask the taste!
Other than the smell of the coffee (which can be intoxicating, I know), what made you decide to study Starbucks? Are you going to center your research around the idea of caffeine addiction? I am very interested to see where this leads you as your project unfolds!

  4. I think it's funny that you hate starbucks but yet you're doing your project on it. I personally hate coffee myself and yet something draws me to the place. I've watch a video on starbucks before and it said how important smells are to starbucks. That when you enter any starbucks it's suppose to have the aroma of coffee and that they can get in trouble if they don't. But anyways I think it's good that you're doing this project because I bet so many people feel like you.

  5. So I know I already commented on this, but we have to comment on a blog entry for this weeks discussion so I will leave another one :) I think you had such a cool take on your topic. Was your research hard to conduct? I am sure you could find a ton of information on everything from Starbucks and coffee. I hope that your essay went the way you wanted to and that you were able to develop an interesting take for the essay.

  6. It's crazy, everything you said I agree with 110%. I can't stand coffee and I'm glad I don't like it (even though it smells amazing). I like you're idea though. Sometimes it's good to study things you don't really like, or at least see it from a different point of view. Even though I don't like coffee, I love Starbucks! Good place, I'm digging it.
